Kraków is the food capital of Małopolska (Lesser Poland), a region whose cooking is defined by fermented rye, smoked meats, wild mushrooms, and dairy from the Tatra highlands — heavier and more rustic than Warsaw, lighter and spicier than Gdańsk. The city's Jewish-Polish heritage survives most visibly in the Kazimierz district, where milk bars (Bar Mleczny), Jewish-style stuffed carp, and rye-bread soups trace a culinary lineage back centuries. Kraków's street food emblem is the **obwarzanek krakowski** — a ring-shaped boiled-then-baked bread sold from cart vendors around Rynek Główny for 2–3 PLN and protected by EU geographical indication. Meals are anchored by pierogi, bigos (hunter's stew), and żurek (fermented rye soup), all of which reach their best form in the old city's cellar restaurants and neighbourhood milk bars.

Local tip

For the cheapest, most authentic meal in Kraków, eat at a **Bar Mleczny** (milk bar) — state-subsidised canteens from the communist era that charge 15–25 PLN for a full plate of pierogi or żurek. Pod Temidą (Grodzka 43) and Centralny (Nowa Huta) are the most historic. Restaurants lining Rynek Główny charge three times more for the same dish with an inferior kitchen; walk one block east or west and prices halve immediately.
