Manama

2 stamps · 102 POI on the web · 2 missions live

Manama is the Gulf Arab food capital that most visitors overlook — a small island city where Bahraini, Indian, Persian, and Levantine food cultures have been layering for centuries. The national dish is Machboos: slow-cooked spiced rice with chicken, lamb, or fish, flavoured with *loomoo* (dried black lime) and a spice blend called *baharat*. The Indian expat community — large and long-established — has made shawarma, biryani, and karak chai (spiced condensed-milk tea) daily street staples as ubiquitous as any local dish. All food in Manama is halal by default; alcohol is confined to hotel restaurants and licensed venues. The Manama Souq and Muharraq historic district are where the most traditional eating happens, far removed from the hotel buffet circuit of the Seef Mall area.

Local tip

Friday brunch culture at Manama's mid-range and upscale hotels (BHD 15–25 per person, typically 12:00–16:00) is a genuine local institution — not a tourist gimmick — where Bahraini families eat alongside expat communities; it is one of the better ways to try a wide spread of Gulf dishes in one sitting. For street-food prices, the Adhari Park area and the old Manama Souq lanes have the most concentrated cluster of cheap, authentic stalls serving shawarma, *harees* (wheat porridge), and *luqaimat* (fried dough balls with date syrup). Price tiers are stark: the same dish that costs 1.5 BHD at a souq stall can run 8–12 BHD at an Adliya restaurant two kilometres away.
